A portal frame enquiry starts with the opening the building must keep clear. Record the clear span between obstructions, the working height below roof framing and the length available for repeated bays. A crane runway or an overhead door can govern clearances in different parts of the same building. Mark each interface on a plan so the supplier can explain which frames and connections change.

Separate structural steel from the weather envelope

Check whether purlins, wall girts, bracing, connection bolts and anchor assemblies are included in the steel package. Review the envelope as a separate group of roof panels, wall panels, closures, trim, flashing and drainage. If a bidder offers a different panel core, ask for the proposed thickness, conductivity data and test documentation for the assembly where the project requires it.

Compare prices with the same handover boundary

One offer may stop at a packed load while another includes freight or inland transfer. Confirm which party arranges export documents, handling and insurance at each handover. Request bundle weights, the container plan and an estimate of the longest protected shipping piece before you finalize lifting or site access allowances.

Request the current evidence

The shortlist should identify drawing revisions, steel grade, connection type and any exclusions that depend on further engineering. For a finish sample, record its supplier and match it against the proposed coating specification. The local project team should confirm the design basis and approval route before a preferred package proceeds to order.
